Barber & Beauty Institute of New York

Christopher & Cynthia Felder Owners/Operators

Master Barber Christopher D. Felder and his wife, Business Executive Cynthia Felder incorporated the Long Island Barber Institute (LIBI) in 2004.  New York State is highly regulated regarding the barbering industry.  The Felder’s were determined to excel at meeting the task of some of the nation’s most stringent mandates for licensing under the New York State Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision.  Through determination, resourcefulness, and personal sacrifice, the Felder’s achieved their vision in December 2006 with the inception of the Barber & Beauty Institute of New York, (BBINY).

BBINY currently stands as the only proprietary school on Long Island offering state board practical training in barbering. BBINY is currently the only accredited Barber School in New York State. BBINY is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences (NACCAS), an accrediting agency for the US Dept. of Education. Both Christopher and Cynthia are highly esteemed as trade school owner/evaluators.  They are contracted by NACCAS for whom they travel to perform school evaluations both locally and overseas.  In addition, they are sought out by proprietors throughout the United States for mentorship and training.  BBINY is also an eligible participant in the Federal Financial Aid Program by the US Department of Education.  BBINY is qualified to enroll students under The Pell Grant and other federally subsidized grants.  The BBINY initiative is comprehensive, relevant and contemporary; keeping astride and in touch with the latest trends and innovations in the beauty and barbering industry. The BBINY barbering candidates undergo the highest standards regarding training with rigorous critique of acquired academic and practical tonsorial skills.  BBINY certifies and issues diplomas to students monthly and sponsors an annual ceremony to publicly honor their graduates and introduce them to potential employers and community services essential to their career development and personal support needs.

The barbering trade is second nature for Christopher Felder.  He was born into three generations of Master Barbers and business owners.  He has been a licensed business owner for over twenty-five years.  Christopher attended Adelphi University earning a Bachelor of Arts in Education. Initially, he endeavored a career path as a high school teacher and college professor.  He decided that teaching alone did not support his entrepreneurial dreams, his goal and mantra being teaching and achieving!  Through his skills and business knowledge of the barbering profession that funded his own college tuition, Christopher believed his entrepreneurial endeavor could bless his family and help others.  Cynthia and Christopher’s kindred spirits agreed. Cynthia funneled her multiple degrees in Business Administration, Hotel & Restaurant Management, and Event Planning to utilize her expertise in building private enterprises.  Cynthia is a Certified John Maxwell Speaker, Coach & Teacher who enhances the BBINY institution by fostering leadership skills within the curriculum as well as the barbering and beauty industry at large.  Together the Felder team and their vision has helped to transform the lives of others. BBINY has produced many highly skilled owners/entrepreneurs throughout NYC and state, even barbers to celebrities.  The highest honor being those BBINY Master Barbers who have returned to dedicate their talent as instructors. Many BBINY Alumni graduates return to participate in our annual graduation ceremony to be of service to their community and fellow barbers.

Christopher, Founder/Executive Director and Cynthia, Director of Administration are proud proprietors of BBINY. They exhibit their community-mindset and focus by offering flexible schedules, career training, economic empowerment, community outreach and cooperative economics as well as providing a positive social outlet for all citizens of the Town of Hempstead and surrounding communities of Nassau County, Long Island / New York.  This ongoing work ethic and commitment to excellence is exemplified as the BBINY team regularly volunteers haircutting and shaving services for charities most notably the St. Baldrick’s Foundation concert fundraiser for children’s cancer research and the Nassau County Veterans Service Agency’s Stand Down.

For 17 years the Felder’s have presented themselves as outstanding citizens of their community. They are the proud parents of two daughters, Jazmine and Arielle. Together they are recipients or numerous national and local community service awards and citations; also known as Long Island’s Power Couple.
